<p>"How much does it cost to 3D print something?" is the first question almost every new buyer asks. The honest answer: for most parts, far less than people expect once you own the printer. This guide shows how to work out the cost of any print in Bangladesh, with a worked example you can copy.</p>
<h2>The short answer</h2>
<p>The cost of a print is mostly the plastic. With <a href="https://costareen.com/product-category/filaments/sunlu/sunlu-pla/">SUNLU PLA+</a> starting at ৳1,550 per kilogram (October 2026), one gram of filament costs about ৳1.55. A 100-gram part therefore uses roughly ৳155 of material. Electricity adds only a few taka on top.</p>
<h2>The four parts of a print's cost</h2>
<table>
<thead>
<tr><th>Cost</th><th>How to work it out</th><th>How much it matters</th></tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>Filament</td><td>Grams used × price per gram</td><td>The biggest part for hobby printing</td></tr>
<tr><td>Electricity</td><td>Print hours × printer power × your unit rate</td><td>Small — usually a few taka per print</td></tr>
<tr><td>Machine wear</td><td>Printer price spread over its working hours, plus nozzles and build plates</td><td>Matters if you print for customers</td></tr>
<tr><td>Failed prints and your time</td><td>Add a margin</td><td>Often forgotten, and it is real</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<h2>Step 1: filament cost</h2>
<p>Your slicer tells you the weight before you print. In Bambu Studio and most other slicers, slice the model and read the filament estimate in grams — it already includes supports and infill.</p>
<p><strong>Formula:</strong> grams used × (spool price ÷ 1000)</p>
<table>
<thead>
<tr><th>Filament (1kg price, Oct 2026)</th><th>Cost per gram</th><th>50 g part</th><th>100 g part</th><th>250 g part</th></tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>SUNLU PETG — ৳1,450</td><td>৳1.45</td><td>৳73</td><td>৳145</td><td>৳363</td></tr>
<tr><td>SUNLU PLA+ — ৳1,550</td><td>৳1.55</td><td>৳78</td><td>৳155</td><td>৳388</td></tr>
<tr><td>Bambu Lab PLA Basic — ৳1,700</td><td>৳1.70</td><td>৳85</td><td>৳170</td><td>৳425</td></tr>
<tr><td>SUNLU TPU — ৳2,700</td><td>৳2.70</td><td>৳135</td><td>৳270</td><td>৳675</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>For a sense of scale: a phone stand is typically 30–60 g, a desk organiser 100–200 g, and a full-size helmet can pass 1 kg.</p>
<h2>Step 2: electricity</h2>
<p>A desktop printer like the Bambu Lab A1 does not draw much once the bed is hot — think of it as roughly a ceiling fan or two, on average, over a long PLA print. A five-hour print uses well under one unit (kWh) of electricity. At typical residential rates that is a few taka, usually under ৳10.</p>
<p>Printing ABS or ASA on an enclosed printer with a hotter bed uses more, but electricity still stays a small share of the total.</p>
<h2>Step 3: machine wear</h2>
<p>If you print for yourself, you can ignore this. If you sell prints, you should not. A simple way to price it: decide how many printing hours you expect from the machine before you replace it, and divide the printer's price by that number.</p>
<p><strong>Example:</strong> a <a href="https://costareen.com/product-category/3d-printers/bambulab-3d-printers/">Bambu Lab A1</a> at ৳52,990, used for 3,000 hours, works out to about ৳18 per printing hour. Add a little for nozzles, build plates and other parts that wear.</p>
<h2>Step 4: failures and your time</h2>
<p>Some prints fail — a part lifts off the bed, a spool tangles, the power goes. A sensible rule for a print business is to add 10–15% to material cost to cover failures. Then add your own time for preparing files, removing supports and finishing.</p>
<h2>Worked example</h2>
<p>A 120 g desk organiser in SUNLU PLA+, six hours of printing:</p>
<table>
<tbody>
<tr><td>Filament: 120 g × ৳1.55</td><td>৳186</td></tr>
<tr><td>Electricity (about six hours)</td><td>about ৳10</td></tr>
<tr><td>Machine wear: 6 h × ৳18</td><td>৳108</td></tr>
<tr><td>Failure allowance (10% of material)</td><td>৳19</td></tr>
<tr><th>Your real cost</th><th>about ৳320</th></tr>
</tbody>
</table>
<p>If you are printing it for yourself, your out-of-pocket cost is the first two lines: about ৳200. If you are selling it, ৳320 is your break-even before labour and profit.</p>
<h2>How to bring the cost down</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Lower infill.</strong> Most decorative parts are fine at 10–15% infill. Going from 30% to 15% can cut a third of the plastic.</li>
<li><strong>Orient the part to avoid supports.</strong> Supports are plastic you throw away.</li>
<li><strong>Use refills where available.</strong> Bambu Lab and SUNLU PLA+ 2.0 refills go on a reusable spool and cost less than a full spool.</li>
<li><strong>Keep filament dry.</strong> Wet filament causes failed prints, and failed prints are the most expensive kind.</li>
<li><strong>Limit colour changes.</strong> Multi-colour printing with an AMS purges filament at every change; a four-colour model can waste more plastic than it uses.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Buying a printer or paying for a print service?</h2>
<p>If you need one or two parts, a print service is cheaper: you pay for the part, not the machine. Costareen runs a <a href="https://costareen.com/print-services/">3D printing service in Dhaka</a> — send the file and we quote it.</p>
<p>If you expect to print regularly — a product you sell, parts for your workshop, student projects every week — owning a printer pays for itself quickly, because each part then costs you only the figures above.
